Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the profound impact of Jain literature on India’s intellectual and spiritual fabric, calling it the “backbone of India’s intellectual grandeur.” Speaking at the Navkar Mahamantra Divas celebrations at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, he stressed the national responsibility to preserve ancient Jain texts and teachings.

“The literature of Jainism is the backbone of India’s intellectual richness. Preserving this vast reservoir of wisdom is our duty,” said PM Modi.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to cultural preservation, he underscored the decision to grant Classical Language status to Prakrit and Pali, ancient languages closely associated with Jain and Buddhist traditions.

PM Modi also shared his personal connection with Jainism, recalling his upbringing in Gujarat where Jain influences were deeply rooted. “Since childhood, I have been blessed to be in the company of Jain Acharyas. Chanting the Navkar Mantra brings immense spiritual peace as we bow to the Panch Parmeshthi,” he said.

He further spoke about the visible imprint of Jain philosophy and architecture in the new Parliament building. “From the Shardula Dwar to the gallery showcasing Sammed Shikhar, from the idol of a Tirthankara at the Lok Sabha entrance to a magnificent painting of Lord Mahavir in the Constitution Hall, Jain influence is embedded in the heart of our democracy,” he noted.

Connecting India’s spiritual roots with its modern aspirations, PM Modi said, “A developed India is one that progresses while preserving its heritage. We are building an India that reaches for the skies without forgetting the depth of its roots.”

In this spirit, he introduced the upcoming ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission’, announced in the Union Budget, which will focus on surveying, preserving, and digitising millions of ancient manuscripts. “Important texts are at risk of being lost. Through this mission, we will bridge the ancient with the modern,” he said.

He also emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence in making India’s spiritual knowledge accessible to the world. “AI can help digitize and translate our rich heritage, spreading India’s message of peace and wisdom globally,” PM Modi stated.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to reclaim India’s lost heritage, he noted that over 20 statues of Jain Tirthankaras have been brought back from abroad in recent years—a source of national pride and cultural restoration.

Calling Gyan Bharatam an “Amrit Sankalp,” PM Modi said India is poised to lead the world by merging technology with spirituality, and by turning its timeless wisdom into a beacon for global harmony.

The Navkar Mahamantra Divas event, attended by Jain monks, scholars, and dignitaries, celebrated the essence of Jain teachings—nonviolence, truth, discipline, and inner peace. The day was marked by collective chanting sessions at multiple locations across the country, with the central ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan.

Prominent leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also participated in related events in Delhi and Ahmedabad respectively.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi had invited citizens to join in chanting the Navkar Mahamantra at 8:27 AM, calling it a unifying spiritual experience that contributes to peace, strength, and harmony in society.
